Best Free iPhone/iPod touch Games

The iPhone is one of the best phones out there today, hands down. It is multi-functioned, allowing the user to do many things beyond the capabilities of a normal phone. One of its best features is that it allows developers to create their own applications for the OS.

This hub will talk about some of the Free Game applications that I think are best. Be warned, I tend to enjoy games that are not repetitive and boring (goodbye Galcon), and I really like games that allow you to progress. I'm addicted to producing music, which has replaced my addiction to MMORPGs (even though Aeon looks awesome).

These are in no particular order!

Paper Toss is definitely one of my favorite free iPhone games. The point is simple. Throw the paper into the waste basket. Seems easy enough, except there is a fan blowing the paper all around. The fan is blowing the paper to the left or the right at varying speed (from 0-6 and including 2 decimal points). You will need to throw the paper at the right angle to make the paper in the basket.

The game mode includes 4 levels, three of which are pictured on the right. The levels are easy, medium, and hard (the distance of the basket varies accordingly) with a bonus level in the airport. The game keeps a score based on how many baskets you make in a row.

Can you beat me?

This free version of the classic unblock me game comes with hundreds upon hundreds of levels. It rates your performance on each of these levels based on how many moves it takes you to get out. The fewer the better. Unfortunately all the levels have the same exit point. All in all a great game for the price.

Catchamouse is a simple game with many levels.  The game starts off with many spaces on a board.  Most of the spaces are empty, at least one space has a hole, and some may have mouse traps.  You get to place a mouse trap (by tapping a space), then the mouse gets to move 1 space.  If the mouse gets to a hole, you lose.  If you trap the mouse inside your traps, you win!  It has many levels, and is pretty difficult (I have yet to beat it).  Great game for problem solving minds!

This cool app lets you play air hockey on your iPhone. You can play against a computer, or against a friend. This makes for good a good time waster when you're with a friend and want to burn some time. This game doesn't have much progression - there are no levels to progress through in single player (and the Ads suck).  You can modify the total points to win the game, the size of each individual goal (effectively giving 1 player a handicap) and the Air Volume on the table.

If you're a fan of guitar hero or dance dance revolution you will want this game.  There are many free versions (although they make you buy songs they also come with a couple free ones).  To win, tap the line at the bottom of the screen in the right location as 'notes' get there.  You will also be required to jerk the phone to the left, right, forward and towards you.

Tap Defense belongs to the extremely popular Tower Defense genre (thank you Blizzard and your customizable Warcraft maps!).  This game is not only one of the best free games for the iPhone, it's also one of the best tower defense games.  It is challenging to beat, and has different game types (for easier or more difficult play).  Throughout each tower defense game you use points to unlock towers, or increase your interest rate (which adds a percentage to your total gold at the end of each round).  All in all, this is a great game worth hours of fun.

This app is an iPhone version of the hoops arcade game found at arcades everywhere (except you don't get tickets for winning).  This is another one of those games where there is no real progression.  There are no levels to beat, and no upgrades to win, but it's fun to try to beat your own score.  Play against friends, and see who can make the most baskets before time runs out!

Are you a big fan of Civilizations for PC? This game is perfect for you! The lite version does have some restrictions, but it shortens the game quite a bit. The game play is almost exactly the same as the classic civilizations, and it fits in your phone.  For those who haven't played Civilizations, it is a turn based strategy game.  To win the game you simply have to CONQUER THE WORLD!  You can make alliances with other civilizations, or go to war and defeat them by force.  Be careful though, your citizens don't like to be at war for too long. Great game, and it's free!
(Beware, this game eats up battery life!)

This game is an electronic version of a classic board game.  You have a couple different color beads to select, and a few spots to place them in.  You place beads of specific colors on the board and the game gives you feedback.  The two types of feedback are: 'right bead, wrong spot', or 'right bead, right spot'.  You have to out-think the opponent and guess their code to win.

This free pinball game is easy to play, and relatively simple. Pull down on the launcher and let go to launch the ball. Tap the left and the right side of the screen to use the paddles. Basic game, hours of fun.
