Yamaha HS 80 M Product Review

When I finally began to search for studio monitors I did a TON of research. I really wanted to get the best value for my money, and get monitors that would give me a realistic impression my productions.

Needless to say, I did a TON of research.

I was pretty quickly able to narrow down my selection to two types of monitors.

  • Yamaha
  • KRK

I had heard great things about both, but what finally got me was a visualization of the EQ curve of the Yamaha monitors. They an almost literally flat EQ curve.

So, I finally decided to buy the HS80M's, and boy am I happy I did. Let's first take a look at the features on the HS80M:

  • Fully powered monitors, no need for an amplifier.
  • Flat EQ curve from 42 Hz to 20 kHz
  • Great quality for both low and high end sounds
  • They're gorgeous
  • 1/4" TRS or XLR connectors
  • Adjustment switches for mid EQ, high trim and low cut
  • Comes with a power cable

The flat EQ curve really lets you get a great idea of EXACTLy how your song will sound before being pumped through the highly unbalanced EQs that most normal speakers have. To quote yamaha, "If Your Mixes Sound Good on These, THey Sound Good On Anything".

I have found that to be absolutely true, although it can be frustrating getting them to sound good on these. It's important to keep in mind that these monitors are not for pleasure listening. You'll definitely need to tighten up your production to get your mix to sound right. With that said, the sound quality is fantastic.

The monitors themselves are gorgeous, but they're quite large. You will need a good amount of space, or some nice monitor stands, to fit these on your desk.

My only complaint about them would be regarding the low end. They actually put out a decent amount of low frequency sounds, but I feel its important to get sub monitor like the HS10W in order to get an accurate idea of how your mixdown sounds on the low end.

All in all, I've had these monitors for over a year with no issues whatsoever. I'd suggest them to anybody looking to get serious with their production.

Happy producing!
